Kelly Rowland’s latest acting venture, Mea Culpa, faced a barrage of negative reviews shortly after its release. The legal thriller drama, which made its debut on Netflix earlier this week, follows a criminal defense attorney played by Rowland, who takes on the case of an artist accused of murdering his girlfriend, portrayed by Trevante Rhodes. As the story unfolds, tensions rise, and desires burn. Mea Culpa, written, directed, and produced by Perry, boasts a talented cast including Sean Sagar, RonReaco Lee, Nick Sagar, Shannon Thornton, and Kerry O’Malley. Despite its intriguing and suspenseful storyline, filled with plot twists, the movie received a meager score of 17 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. According to the site, less than one-fifth of the critics who viewed it offered a positive review. Fans, too, voiced their disappointment over the film, taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts. One infuriated social media user lamented, “Mea Culpa (2024) … from start to finish, this is quite simply the worst Tyler Perry film to date.” “I’d go as far as to say it’s probably one of the worst films I’ve ever had the displeasure to sit through. Not one shred of emotion, not one tear or laugh. Nothing for 120 minutes,” he added.
