The hardest choice anyone will ever have to make is whether to take a loved one off life support when the outlook is bleak.
Ryan Finley was forced to make this choice after his wife Jill fell into a coma.
She was found by Ryan unresponsive and gasping for air. Before the paramedics got there, he ran to her and did everything he could to get her to wake up.
Even though he knew there was little chance of success, he still gave CPR and prayed.
Despite having a weak heart and slow breathing, paramedics had the ability to revive Jill.
To minimize harm to her oxygen-starved brain, she was quickly flown to Oklahoma Heart Hospital while wearing a suit that lowered her body temperature. Sadly, she collapsed and fell into a coma.
Every day Ryan would pray. Weeks turned into days, and despite learning that Jill had no chance, he never lost faith in her. The medical staff then asked him if he would think about allowing them to turn off her life support.
He detailed that day in his diary, and his words—to put it mildly—are heartbreaking.
The worst day of my life could possibly be today. I need to determine whether she will pass away, Ryan wrote.
He dialed after attempting to picture Jill’s predicament and coming to the conclusion that she wouldn’t want to live that way.
The machine was turned off, the family said their goodbyes, and Jill was still there. Because she was experiencing the “final rally,” the doctors predicted that she wouldn’t pass away right away.
At that precise moment, Jill began to wander aimlessly. She instructed her husband to take her to Ted’s or Melting Pot, two of her favorite Mexican eateries, much to the surprise of her husband, who was experiencing a great deal of heartbreak.
Ryan knew his loved one would live, no matter how absurd that seemed. Also, he was correct. Jill was able to breathe on her own following heart surgery.
Jill claimed she had no recollection of her time spent unconscious, but she had trouble remembering things quickly and expressing herself in a few ways.
She was healthy and prepared to make the most of the second chance God had given her, aside from that.
The relationship is untarnished and more solid than it has ever been, which the couple appreciates. Every day, minute, and hour is something we enjoy, Jill said. Though it makes things more understandable, we didn’t before.
